Iconic doughnut shop Fluffy Fresh reopens with new owners in Mission

Though it has new owners, the doughnut shop is serving the same doughnuts that customers in Mission have come to know for decades.

After an iconic doughnut shop closed its doors in Mission last year, it’s back open — this time with different owners.

Fluffy Fresh reopened its doors Wednesday in downtown Mission, to a steady stream of eager customers. The new owners, wife-and-husband team Christina and Eric Benson, are using Fluffy Fresh’s original recipe.

Fluffy Fresh is at 5729 Johnson Drive

  • The doughnut shop is in a space just off Johnson Drive between Outlook Street and Reeds Road in downtown Mission.
  • There, it’s nestled between two other local shops (which happen to be under the same ownership): gift shop Truly Madly Depot and bookstore cafe The Book Club.
  • Though the shop’s regular hours are officially from 5 to 10 a.m., it closes each morning after doughnuts sell out (which is usually between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.).

Fluffy Fresh has been in Mission for decades

Fluffy Fresh’s original owner, Jim Hollinger, had owned and operated the shop since the 1980s — though the brand has existed in the Kansas City metro area for even longer than that.

The doughnut shop has another location in Kansas City, Missouri, under the same name — though the owners of that shop now have no connection to the Mission store.

Christina Benson, who now owns Fluffy Fresh with her husband, Eric Benson, is an experienced baker. Prior to reopening the doughnut shop, she ran a wedding cake business out of her home.

Eric grew up in the Kansas City area, and the two of them have now been back in the area for more than a decade. When the opportunity came to fill a doughnut-shaped gap of Johnson Drive, the two of them jumped at the chance to bring back a well-established brand.

So far, Christina said, the response from the community has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“This place is a staple in Kansas City,” Christina said. “(Hollinger) really built something special, and we just want to be a part of that.”

In between the closure of the original Fluffy Fresh and its reopening with new owners, Topeka-based doughnut shop Holy Moly briefly opened in the Mission space.

Opening in November 2025, Holy Moly’s stint there lasted a few months. By February, the space was back up for sale.

Unlike Holy Moly, the doughnuts served at the Bensons’ shop have the same recipe that customers have come to know and love from the original Fluffy Fresh.

“People really wanted what (Hollinger) did and what he’s been doing for decades, and so that’s what we wanted to do,” Christina said. “People walk in so excited and so happy to see us, and so happy that we’re here doing what we’re doing. It’s really fun to be a part of that.”
